Biomedical Data and IT Project Manager (f/m) – Open Position

To support teaching and research, IT Services (ITS) of ETH Zurich are working as a service organization in a large and complex IT environment. Scientific IT Services (SIS, a section of ITS) aims at bridging the gap between computational research and IT service and infrastructure provisioning and provide a stimulating, flexible and family-friendly working environment. SIS are working closely together with ETH researchers to provide support in the wide area of scientific computing from data management and analysis, development of scientific software to the operation of high performance and cloud computing infrastructures.

SIS are currently seeking to appoint a Biomedical Data and IT Project Manager to support the biomedical and personalized health research community of ETH Zurich – one of ETH’s strategic scientific areas – with “big data” and computing services.

Job description

The goal of this position is to coordinate the management of sensitive biomedical data for various types of personalized medicine projects of ETH researchers in collaboration with other Swiss universities, hospitals, and industry partners. The Biomedical Data and IT Project Manager is responsible for the full lifecycle of the projects starting from requirement analysis, solution engineering for the management and analysis of biomedical data, coordination with relevant stakeholders, customer support and project reporting. In the context of ETH and Swiss-wide bodies and initiatives (e.g. PHRT, SPHN and BioMedIT), the Biomedical Data and IT Project Manager synergises with colleagues from ETH and other Universities to take an active part towards the interoperability of Swiss personalized medicine research programmes. In this role, the Biomedical Data and IT Project Manager interacts closely with research groups in seeking optimal solutions, provides consulting and training and expands our team acting at the interface between the various stakeholders (domain scientists, hospital IT) and other members of SIS (e.g. high performance computing specialists, software engineers).

Your profile

This position requires at least a PhD degree in bio- or medical informatics or a closely related discipline and a good understanding of biomedical data, relevant technologies and available IT solutions.

Data and IT skills: the successful candidate must have proven experience with data management systems, databases as well as strong technical skills in supporting relevant biomedical software packages. Experience in using scripting languages (e.g. Bash, R, Python) and working in the Linux / Unix environment as well as some knowledge about network security or high performance and cloud computing is a plus.

Project management skills: the successful candidate must have strong analytical abilities, good communication, project management and organization skills as well as the ability to work independently and in teams of domain scientists and IT specialists. Interest in data security policies and Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) issues of biomedical data is a plus.

The position is located in Zurich with occasional travel to Basel and other Swiss cities. The initial contract will be for a period of one (1) year, with the possibility of renewal.
