PASC18 – Public Lecture by David Bader and ComPat Workshop

The PASC18 Organizing Team is pleased to announce that this year’s Public Lecture will be held by David Bader from Georgia Tech, USA, and that Basel will host a ComPat Training Workshop on Multiscale Modelling & Simulation on HPC on July 5, 2018, the day after PASC18.

PASC18 Public Lecture by David Bader: Massive-Scale Analytics Applied to Real-World Problems

Emerging real-world graph problems include: detecting and preventing disease in human populations; revealing community structure in large social networks; and improving the resilience of the electric power grid. Unlike traditional applications in computational science and engineering, solving these social problems at scale often raises new challenges because of the sparsity and lack of locality in the data, the need for research on scalable algorithms and development of frameworks for solving these real-world problems on high performance computers, and for improved models that capture the noise and bias inherent in the torrential data streams.

This talk will discuss the opportunities and challenges in massive data-intensive computing for applications in social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering.

About David Bader

David A. Bader is Professor and Chair of the School of Computational Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, and is regarded as one of the world’s leading experts in data sciences. His interests are at the intersection of high performance computing (HPC) and real-world applications, including cybersecurity, massive-scale analytics, and computational genomics. Bader has co-authored over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and is an associate editor for high-impact publications including IEEE Transactions on Computers, ACM Transactions on Parallel Computing, and ACM Journal of Experimental Algorithmics. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and AAAS, and has served on a number of advisory committees in scientific computing and cyber-infrastructure, including the White House’s National Strategic Computing Initiative. Bader has served as a lead scientist in several DARPA programs and is a co-founder of the Graph500 list, a rating of “Big Data” computing platforms. He was recognized as a “Rock Star of HPC” by InsideHPC and as HPCwire’s “People to Watch” in 2012 and 2014.

ComPat Training Workshop on Multiscale Modelling & Simulation on HPC

If your research area involves multiscale modelling, you might be interested in a workshop taking place in Basel on July 5, 2018, the day after the PASC18 conference closing. The ComPat Training Workshop on Multiscale Modelling & Simulation on HPC will be hosted at the Swissôtel Le Plaza Basel, directly adjacent to the PASC18 conference venue.

Multiscale phenomena are ubiquitous and are the key to understanding the complexity of our world. In computational research, tackling problems in a multiscale way reveals a deeper understanding of a system under investigation and higher-fidelity output. With the advent of exascale supercomputing power, multiscale simulations hold unprecedented power for researchers. The key to unlocking this power is being able to wield it.

In this 3-hour session, with the guidance of ComPat trainers, participants will use one of ComPat’s applications and couple it in a multiscale manner on their local laptops. Participants will then run the multiscale application on a supercomputer using ComPat tools and services. Trainers will describe the principles, concepts, tools, and codes, and, by the end of the session, participants will be able to run a multiscale application on HPC. A complimentary lunch will be provided to give participants the opportunity to discuss their own applications.
