hpc-ch is a community linking all HPC service providers in Switzerland. In our four years of existence, we were able to create a vibrant community with a very intense knowledge transfer and a lot of interpersonal contacts. In the last months we were able to extend our community from academia to industry with representatives of the banking, pharmaceutical and engineering industries. To commemorate this important step, we would like to invite you to participate to the next forum of the hpc-ch community to be held on:

Thursday, May 23th, 2013 from 10:00 until 17:00, kindly hosted by Novartis in Basel.

This meeting will bring together all members of the hpc-ch community (academia and industry), giving a unique networking possibly and the chance to exchange best practices. We would like the talks to address the following points:

Overview of HPC activities in the different companies.

What are the (business) applications of HPC?

How are HPC services being provided?

What are the challenges about HPC in industry?

Participation is on invitation only.

The agenda lists the following presentations (full agenda; how to reach Novartis):

Welcome and introduction; Michele De Lorenzi (CSCS), Nicholas Holway (Novartis)

Keynote presentation; Nicholas Holway (Novartis)

Presentation of the Swiss HPC Service Provider community; Christian Bolliger (UZH)

The Human Brain Project, recently awarded a 10 year grant by the EU Commission, will pull together all our existing knowledge about the human brain and to reconstruct the brain, piece by piece, in supercomputer-based models and simulations. In a special session at the 2013 International Supercomputing Conference, scientists working on the Human Brain Project will discuss their vision and roadmap for computing.

ISC’13 will be held June 16-20 in Leipzig, Germany. The session on “Supercomputing & Human Brain Project – Following Brain Research & ICT on 10-Year Quest” will be held Tuesday, June 18.

The brain, with its billions of interconnected neurons, is without any doubt the most complex organ in the body and has long fascinated researchers attempting to understand all its mysteries. The Human Brain Project will attempt to simulate the complete human brain, offering the prospect of a new understanding of the human brain and its diseases and of completely new computing and robotic technologies.

Federating more than 80 European and international research institutions, the Human Brain Project is estimated to cost 1.19 billion euros. It will be coordinated at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, by neuroscientist Henry Markram with co-directors Karlheinz Meier of Heidelberg University, Germany, and Richard Frackowiak of Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois and the University of Lausanne. The project will also associate some important North American and Japanese partners.

Reminder for the CSCS II call of proposals. If you wish to be considered for the allocation period starting on 1 October 2013, then you need to submit your production project proposal no later than 11 May 2013 at 23:59 (deadline).

Potential applicants need to make sure that you have an active username and password so that you can download a submission form. They also need to make sure that you have the mandatory data. Projects missing mandatory data will not be processed.

Project submission proposal »

BE AWARE: If you have not yet done your performance analysis we strongly advise you to start right away. Note that the performance analysis might not be straightforward for your code. Help needs to be asked well in advance (one day before the deadline is not advisable!!!) otherwise we cannot guarantee to solve your problem in time for submission. Requests for help with the performance analysis cannot come later than Tuesday April 30th, 2013.

We would like to make you aware that the call for proposals for the U.S. Department of Energy’s INCITE program 2014 is now open.

The INCITE program targets large-scale, computationally intensive projects that would not be possible or productive without petascale computing. Consequently applicants for this program must present evidence that their proposed production simulations can make effective use of a significant fraction of the machine for which resources are being requested.

INCITE is currently soliciting proposals of research for awards of time on the 27-petaflops Cray XK7 “Titan” and the 10-petaflops IBM Blue Gene/Q “Mira” beginning calendar year 2014.

Details of the call for proposals»

Potential applicants should visit the FAQ page for the INCITE call »

In particular applicants should pay attention to these questions

4. Who is eligible to participate in INCITE?
6. How are INCITE projects chosen?
12. What constitutes a “computationally intensive” research project?
13. Can I meet the computationally intensive criterion by loosely coupling my jobs?
17. Are foreign researchers and teams eligible to apply?

This year potential interested parties can register for a webinar on the proposal process with question and answer session on April 24 and May 15, 2013.

Additional information »

The closing date for this call is 11:59 p.m. EDT on Friday, June 28, 2013.
