A new-generation analog-to-digital converter (ADC) developed by a joint IBM-EPFL team has the potential to greatly increase the speed and volume of data that can be transferred over the Internet. Author: Sarah Perrin Source: Mediacom Images, audio, and video could soon travel through cyberspace much faster, using less energy, thanks to a new generation of [...]
UZH, FGCZ & SystemsX.chintroduces software framework VM-MAD – a cloud/cluster software for service-oriented academic environments
The Grid Computing Competence Center (GC3) at the University of Zurich (UZH) together with FGCZ (Functional Genomics Center Zurich), and SystemsX.ch will present at the International Supercomputing Conference 2013 (ISC13) a paper introducing the software framework VM-MAD. The paper –authored by the entire VM-MAD team, including GC3′s Tyanko Aleksiev, Sergio Maffioletti, and Riccardo Murri– presents [...]
Fantastic flash memory combines graphene and molybdenite
EPFL scientists have combined two materials with advantageous electronic properties – graphene and molybdenite – into a flash memory prototype that is very promising in terms of performance, size, flexibility and energy consumption. Author: Sarah Perrin Source: Mediacom After the molybdenite chip, we now have molybdenite flash memory, a significant step forward in the use [...]
Installation of the IBM TS3500 tape library at CSCS
In early 2013 an automated tape library (IBM TS3500) was installed at CSCS increasing the storage capacity up to ~ 27.4 PB petabytes of uncompressed data. The library is composed of 16 frames plus 2 service bays cabinets and can contain up to 18‘257 tapes moved by two robots (in the actual configuration there are 24 LTO5 drives). The Library [...]
A new light source for quantum computers
Researchers at EPFL have discovered a new way of emitting photons one at a time. They have constructed semiconductor nanowires with “quantum dots” of unprecedented quality – a discovery with implications for the future of quantum computing. Author: Laure-Anne Pessina Source: Mediacom In a future of quantum computing, data will be treated and transmitted by [...]
