Groundbreaking method for computer simulation: Car-Parrinello method turns 25

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

ETH Life just published an article on the Car-Parrinello method for  performing ab-initio quantum mechanical molecular dynamics (MD). Prof. Parrinello, one of the two scientists that created the methods holds a dual professorship at ETH Zurich and the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano from 2011.

The method has been developed 25 years ago and allowed the first quantum mechanical calculation of the molecular state – “ab initio”. The Car-Parrinello method has been developed and honed for different applications over the years and has produced a lot of important information in various research disciplines.

New Institute of Computational Sciences at Università delle Svizzera italiana

Friday, October 1st, 2010

On September 20th, the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) inaugured the new Institute of Computational Sciences (Istituto di scienze computazionali, ICS). The ICS provides a unique research environment, where strong competences in modeling, simulation and information science come together in an open and application oriented atmosphere. This “virtual laboratory” will conduct complex simulations with supercomputers and cooperate closely with the Swiss Center for Scientific Computing (CSCS) at the ETH Zurich.

ICS has been presented by the presitend of USI Piero Martinoli, the dean of the information science faculty prof. Mauro Pezzè, the director of the ICS prof. Rolf Krause,  prof. Michele Parrinello (USI and ETH Zurich) and the director of CSCS prof. Thomas Schulthess. They presented the reasons for the creation of the new institute and his potential for science, society and economy.

Master of Informatics with Major in Computational Science at USI

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) is offering a Master of Informatics with Major in Computational Science. This full time programme is worth 120 ECTS and stretches over two years. It allows students to personalize their study curricula according to their individual interests. As the Master will be launched in September 2010, the precise study programme is still under construction.

Computational Science Major Director is Prof. Dr. Rolf Krause of the Institute of Computational Science (ICS). ICS  provides a unique research environment, where strong competences in modeling, simulation and information science come together in an open and application oriented atmosphere.
