Submissions for ISC Research Papers, Tutorials Now Being Accepted

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

The 2012 International Supercomputing Conference Research Paper and Tutorial Committees are now accepting full papers and tutorial proposals for ISC´12 in Europe. The ISC´12 Call for Papers is supported by the IEEE Germany Section.

The deadline for research paper and tutorial submissions is Sunday, January, 22, 2012. Please refer to the ISC´12 website for full submission guidelines or contact info.scientificsession@isc-events.com and info.tutorial@isc-events.com.

The ISC´12 conference and exhibition, the 27th in the ISC series, will take place June 17 – 21, 2012, and is expected to draw more than 2,400 academic and industry attendees and 160 exhibitors representing high-performance computing, networking and storage to Hamburg, Germany.

High-quality research papers reporting original work in theoretical, experimental and industry research and development are sought in the following areas:

  • Architectures (multicore/manycore systems, heterogeneous systems, network technology and programming models)
  • Algorithms and Analysis (scalability on future architectures, performance evaluation and tuning)
  • Large-Scale Simulations (coupled simulations, industrial simulations and data visualization)
  • Future Trends (Exascale HPC, HPC in the Cloud)
  • Storage and Data (file systems and tape libraries, data intensive applications and databases)
  • Software Engineering in HPC (application of methods, surveys)
  • Supercomputing Facility (batch job management, job mix and system utilization and monitoring and administration tools)
  • A totally new topic next year will be the Scalable Applications: 50k+ (ISC Research thrust). The Research Paper committee encourages scientists to submit results which demonstrate scaling of an application to more than 50,000 cores.

ISC Awards Program

Two awards will be given to the most outstanding papers. The German Gauss Center for Supercomputing sponsors the Gauss Award, which will be assigned to the most outstanding paper in the field of scalable supercomputing.

The second award is the PRACE (the Partnership for Advanced Computing) Award which will be awarded to the best scientific paper by a European student or scientist in the following areas – a breakthrough in science achieved with high performance computing resources, algorithms or implementations that achieve significant improvements in scalability and novel approaches to performance evaluation on massively parallel architectures.

The ISC´12 Tutorials are intended as educational events that cover all areas as listed on the Call for Research Papers. However, ISC encourage tutorials of broad applicability rather than those focusing solely on the research in a limited domain or a particular group.

Presenters are encouraged to incorporate hands-on sessions where it is appropriate and provide the attendees with a comprehensive introduction to the topic before moving on to cover specific approaches in more depth.

Other Submission Deadlines

Call for Student Volunteers: Monday, April 2, 2012

Call for Posters: Monday, April 9, 2012

Call for BoFs: Monday, April 9, 2012

Questions about the technical program should be directed to the Conference Program Coordinator, Ms. Heike Walther, at heike.walther@isc-events.com.

After the great success of last year, hpc-ch will again participate at the ISC conference and exhibit with a community booth.

Looking for Swiss Teams to Participate to ISC12 Student Cluster Competition

Friday, October 21st, 2011

hpc-ch is looking for Swiss Teams to participate to ISC12 Student Cluster Competition

  • Are student at a Swiss university?
  • Have you strong interest in HPC / Supercomputing?
  • Do you want to represent Switzerland in an international competition?

Then send  an e-mail to michele.delorenzi@cscs.ch so that we can get in contact with you! Registration is open to teams and single participants.

hpc-ch will take care to support you in preparing for the competition. So we will organize specific courses and help you finding sponsors for hardware and travel expenses.

Latest day for the registration is Friday October 28th. So hurry up!

Memberes of the hpc-ch community are invited to forward this message inside their university to reach the largest possible number of possible interested students.

Student Cluster Competition

ISC’12 will feature a new activity – the HPCAC-ISC Student Cluster Competition as an opportunity to showcase student expertise in a friendly yet spirited competition. The competition will feature small teams that compete to demonstrate the incredible capabilities of state-of- the-art high-performance cluster hardware and software.

In a real-time challenge, teams of six undergraduate and/or high school students will build a small cluster of their own design on the ISC exhibit floor and race to demonstrate the greatest performance across a series of benchmarks and applications. The students will have a unique opportunity to learn, experience and demonstrate how high-performance computing influence our world and day-to-day learning.

Held in collaboration of the HPC Advisory Council and ISC, the Student Cluster Competition is designed to introduce the next generation of students to the high performance computing world and community.

Competition Description

The Competition is an intense challenge, where the hard work and preparation of student teams will culminate on the exhibit floor in Hamburg, Germany during ISC12. Student teams will compete to:

  • Build and configure an HPC cluster
  • Run HPC benchmarks to achieve the best performance
  • Run a real-world workload consisting of four designated scientific applications to achieve the highest throughput of accurate runs

Convey to student cluster competition participants and judges their HPC knowledge through visualizations, interviews, and booth display, including a short outreach presentation to student participants

Points will be awarded for all three components. The team scoring the highest aggregate points across all three components will be the overall winner of the competition.

hpc-ch Booth at ISC: Many Thanks to all the Team and See you at ISC12

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

There were a lot of visitors at the hpc-ch booth at ISC11. Their feedback was always very positive. We were able to demonstrate that Switzerland is a very active country in the field of HPC. The booth is the result of a great teamwork. We would like to say thank you to all persons who contributed to this success.

The realisation of the booth has been co-ordinated by Christian Bolliger (University of Zurich, UZH),  Vittoria Rezzonico (EPF Lausanne) and Michele De Lorenzi (CSCS). The layout of the poster is of Rosa Guggenheim and the community video displayed at the booth has been produced by Reini Briegel (UZH). Heidi Oggian, Cristina Rezzonico and Franziska Schärli (CSCS) helped in a lot of administrative and coordination tasks.

Many members were present at the booth to introduce the visitors to the HPC activities in Switzerland: Christian Bolliger (UZH), Teo Brasacchio (ETH Zurich), Michele De Lorenzi (CSCS), Pablo Fernandez (CSCS), Alexander Godknecht (UZH), Hussein Harake (CSCS), Colin McMurtrie (CSCS), Robert Speck (Università della Svizzera italiana).

We would like to thank all members organisations of hpc-ch that encouraged us in our work and to CSCS, EPF Lausanne, EMPA, University of Basel, University of Bern, University of Zurich for their monetary sponsoring.

In the next short video Christian Bolliger on the way home summarises his experience and announces the plan to participate to ISC12.
