Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

39th SPEEDUP Workshop on High Performance Computing,
September 6/7, 2010, at ETH Zurich

The intention of this workshop is to present and discuss the state-of-the-art in high-performance and parallel scientific computing. Presentations will focus on algorithms, applications, and software issues related to high-performance parallel computing.  The focus of the workshop on Monday Sept 6 will be on software environments for large scale simulations and on the issues of fault tolerance in massively parallel systems.

The scientific program of Sept 6 consists of seven 45-minute talks and a poster session.  Please encourage your collaborators to uploaded an abstract.  The deadline is August 28, 2010.

On Sept 7 we will organize a tutorial on hybrid MPI/OpenMP computing. It will be taught by Timothy Stitt and Neil Stringfellow (both CSCS, Manno, Switzerland).

There is a small fee of CHF 50 payable at the workshop.  For students the workshop is free of charge.

Details and the registration form can be found at http://www.speedup.ch/.

The fee for the tutorial are CHF150 payable at the workshop or tutorial.  For students the price is CHF50.

Organizing Committee:Andreas Adelmann (PSI Villigen), Peter Arbenz (ETH Zurich), Olaf Schenk (University of Basel), Vittoria Rezzonico (EPF Lausanne), Ales Janka (University of Fribourg).

Follow-up second hpc-ch forum on OS and Installation Methods at EPFL

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

The second hpc-ch forum on operating systems and installation methods at EPF Lausanne on May 20 has been a great success with more than 35 HPC participants.

In the morning we have been welcomed to EPFL by Vittoria Rezzonico (sysadmin and local organizer) and Jean-Claude Berney (director of the IT services). Jean-Claude pointed out the importance of HPC for EPFL and the growing infrastructure needs to run the supercomputers. He also acknowledged the importance of our community giving the possibility to exchange knowledge between peers in Switzerland.

Vittoria organized for us site visits to the technical infrastructure and computing room at EPFL. Every think was very impressive and show how complex it is today to run data centers.

In later postings we will publish the slides presented in the different technical talks.

In different visits we had also a look to the technical infrastructure and the different computer room (both very impressive).

We would like to thank Vittoria Rezzonico and all the team at EPFL for the organization and hosting us.

Here below you will find some pictures of the day.

CSCS Awarded by HPC Advisory Council at ISC’10

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

The HPC Advisory Council awarded CSCS during the closing session at the ISC 2010 conference in Hamburg as organization who demonstrated above and beyond HPC outreach/education.  CSCS organized last March the HPC Advisory Council Switzerland Workshop 2010 in Lugano. The workshop has been a great success with more than 100 HPC professionals attending the conference. CSCS will host a similar conference in 2011

The prize of the HPC Advisory Council has been received by Hussein Harake  who has beein the initiator of the conference at CSCS (see picture here below).

Common dinner hpc-ch and SwiNg communities

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Lausanne is for two days the HPC and Grid center of Switzerland. In fact both communities SwiNG and hpc-ch managed to organize two very interesting meetings:

We managed to meet for a common dinner in a restaurant downtown in Lauanne having a very good time and good food. If you love statistics: total of 21 participants, 7 from SwinNG, 7 from hpc-ch and 7 from both communities.

We would at this place thanks Dean from SwinNG for having invited all of us to the dinner. We really appreciated.

For the people leaving the dinner early: Yes, we had an additional meeting after the dinner until 2 in the morning having long discussions about life and system management.
