Guten Tag, Bonjour, Buongiorno, Bun di – HPC News from Switzerland on ISC HPC Blog

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Switzerland will be present in the newly launched ISC HPC Blog launched at the beginning of February 2012.

Michele De Lorenzi (head of communication and associate director at CSCS) and Simone Ulmer (science journalist) will be posting articles about HPC activities in Switzerland on a regular basis.

To start the series of blog entries, they welcomed the readers by saying “Hello” in the four national Swiss languages (German, French, Italian and Rumanch). This is to demonstrate their effort to report about HPC and supercomputing-enabled science from all Swiss regions.

HPC Relevant Workshops at eScience2012 – Extending HPC to New Communities + Big Data Processing

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

Representatives of our hpc-ch community could be interested in participating to two of the associated workshop of the  eScience2012 conference (Chicago, 8-12 October 2012):

Workshop – Extending High-Performance Computing Beyond its Traditional User CommunitiesThe desired outcome of the workshop is an improved understanding of actions that should be taken by the various stakeholders in order to enable a wide spectrum of practitioners to use HPC resources as part of their work and data flows, and to establish an informal network of people and communities interested in this outcome.

Tutorial – Big Data Processing: Lessons from Industry and Applications in ScienceThis tutorial aims to clarify some of the critical concepts in the design space of big data and scalable data analytics and share lessons from industry that readily apply to science applications. We will provide a detailed tour of the primary technology and systems powering the analytic and scalable data management landscape in industry, identify appropriate systems for a specific set of application requirements in science and technical computing, and illustrate how they can be used to develop big data applications using practical, real-world examples such as weblog processing, distributed machine learning over large data sets, and sensor data processing.

Updates about the hpc-ch community / events overview

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Dear members and guests of hpc-ch

Last year was very successful for our hpc-ch community. In addition to the two forums we also participated for the first time with our own booth at ISC11 and SC11. I would like to thank all organizations (sponsoring, infrastructure) and people (engagement) that made all this possible. I believe that we could demonstrate the capabilities of Switzerland in HPC at an international level.

This year´s goal will be to keep the (high) level of last year the same, with a small extension.

Let me start with the small extension: Different companies deploying HPC systems demonstrated interest in our activities. For this reason I started creating a sub community called “industry” (the original one being called “academia”). I’m sure in the mid term we will find interesting synergies between these two communities. At this time I do not plan any specific activity or event for industry. Please tell me if you know someone from industry (not vendors) that could be interested in joining us.

For the events we have a small change in the subject order of the forums. Together with our colleagues at EMPA we decided to change the content (not the date and place) of the forums. EMPA will host an event in May on Infrastructure for HPC and CSCS will host in October an event on storage. This because we have different running projects about storage in Switzerland, with results expected in autumn.

The list of events for 2012 is the following:

  • HPC Advisory Council Switzerland Conference 2012, March 13-15 in Lugano, bringing together system managers, researchers, developers, computational scientists, students and industry affiliates for cross-training and to discuss recent HPC developments and future advancements. More details on a the agenda and registration »
  • hpc-ch Forum “Infrastructure for HPC“, hosted by EMPA, May 24, 2012
  • Community booth at ISC12, Hamburg, June 18-21, 2012
  • hpc-ch Forum “Handling huge amount of data for HPC“, hosted by CSCS, October 25, 2012
  • Community booth at SC12, Salt Lake City, November 12-15, 2012

In due advance we will send you a call for participation for the two forums and ask for a contribution for the booths (sponsorships are welcome).

Join us for the HPC Advisory Council Switzerland Conference (March 13-15, 2012)

HPC Advisory Council and Swiss Supercomputing Centre to host HPC Switzerland Conference 2012

Date: March 13-15, 2012
Location: Palazzo dei Congressi, Switzerland

The HPC Advisory Council and the Swiss Supercomputing Centre will host the HPC Advisory Council Switzerland Conference 2012 in the Lugano Convention Centre, Lugano, Switzerland, from March 13-15, 2012. The conference will focus on High-Performance Computing (HPC) education, hands-on and classroom training and overviews of new important HPC developments and trends.

The conference will include comprehensive education for topics such as high-speed interconnects, high-performance and parallel I/O, communication libraries (such as MPI, SHMEM and PGAS), GPU and accelerations, Big Data, high-performance cloud computing, and will include advanced topics and development for upcoming HPC technologies. In addition, attendees will receive hands-on training for topics on clustering, network, troubleshooting, tuning, and optimizations.

For the complete agenda and schedule, please refer to the conference website here ». The 3-day conference is CHF 80.00. Registration is required and can be made at the HPC Advisory Council Switzerland Conference registration page.

Speaking opportunities as well as sponsorship opportunities are still available. You can submit a speaking proposal here ».
