The call will close on 10th of January, 2012

The call is also open for researchers from Swiss universities and research laboratories. Switzerland is represented in PRACE by ETH Zurich as legal entity and by CSCS, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre as project partner..

This call is the fourth PRACE-RI Regular call for Project access, inviting applications for high-end (Tier-0) computing resources to carry out projects which have high scientific quality and impact. Allocation will be for one year starting from 1st of May 2012. The call also invites proposals for project access to Tier-1 resources, via DECI, providing single project cross-national access to national (Tier-1) HPC-resources.

More information about the new call »

PRACE granted 721 million compute hours on Tier-0 systems in previous Tier-0 call

A total of 53 applications requesting 1.687 million compute core hours were received in the PRACE 3rd regular call, for one year resource allocations on the PRACE Research Infrastructure. 24 of these applications were granted 721 million compute hours on Tier-0 systems. The projects were chosen for their high level of scientific and technical maturity, expected impact, and demonstrated need for Tier-0 resources.

The projects are from the following scientific areas: astrophysics, chemistry and material science, medicine and life sciences, engineering and energy, fundamental physics and mathematics.

Allocations for Tier-1

54 proposals were received in the latest DECI call, and 35 of these were awarded 91 million processor core hours in total. The call was oversubscribed by more than a factor of 2.5. Due to the excellent quality of the proposals, the contributing partners increased the resources offered to the call by 11% over
the original commitment; however this still meant that many good projects could not be granted resources.

CSCS to Grant 250 mio CPU Hours on Cray XE6 for next Allocation Period http://www.hpc-ch.org/wp/2011/09/15/cscs-to-grant-250-mio-cpu-hours-on-cray-xe6-for-next-allocation-period/ http://www.hpc-ch.org/wp/2011/09/15/cscs-to-grant-250-mio-cpu-hours-on-cray-xe6-for-next-allocation-period/#comments Thu, 15 Sep 2011 09:18:01 +0000 mdl http://www.hpc-ch.org/wp/?p=1825 The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) supports Swiss scientist in all matters concerning supercomputing and scientific computing. Until October 14th 2011 new requests for compute time for large projects can be submitted. Users now also have access to supercomputers for their data analysis.

The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) is the High Performance Computing (HPC) partner for Swiss technical universities, universities and federal research entities. Its core mission is to provide scientists with the compute infrastructure they need. In this context, CSCS with its international team offers scientists important know-how and competent support in HPC, visualisation, the implementation of codes on the computers as well as with the continuous development and optimisation of codes and algorithms on new computer architectures.

Support in HPC

Thanks to close collaborations with the scientists, the CSCS team is familiar with the key issues of various disciplines in HPC. As the competence centre for supercomputing CSCS often brings together scientists that, independently from each other, are seeking solutions to similar problems. This often leads to research co-operations, such as those in the areas of astrophysics, climate materials research that CSCS actively supports in all matters HPC.

Thanks to its flexibility and innovation CSCS has gained a reputation amongst compute centres and hardware vendors worldwide, which has led to co-operations with other institutions and industry. This enables CSCS to influence hardware developments – based on the requirements of our users – and to develop new tools and methods, allowing CSCS to provide Swiss scientist with a competitive advantage in the worldwide competition.

Submission deadline 14th October

Researchers in computational sciences can continuously submit short preparatory projects to CSCS. For large projects with a duration of up to three years, scientist can apply for compute time every 6 months. The current call for proposals closes on October 14th 2011 and will see 250 million cpu hours allocated amongst Swiss institutions starting April 1st 2012.

Thanks to the installation this summer of the Cray XMT and SGI UV users now have access to supercomputers for their data analysis and data structuring. Registered users can use their user name and password to download the application forms from the CSCS website from the beginning of October. Details about this and full information on who can apply for compute time and what this requires can be found at http://www.cscs.ch/nss/submission

HP2C – Call for Focused Projects on Risk Analysis for Global Challenges http://www.hpc-ch.org/wp/2010/07/16/hp2c-call-for-focused-projects-on-risk-analysis-for-global-challenges/ http://www.hpc-ch.org/wp/2010/07/16/hp2c-call-for-focused-projects-on-risk-analysis-for-global-challenges/#comments Fri, 16 Jul 2010 09:09:56 +0000 mdl http://www.hpc-ch.org/wp/?p=898 The High Performance and High Productivity Computing Platform (HP2C) invites the submission of proposals focused on applications of high performance computing to risk analysis for global challenges.

These projects should focus on advances in mathematical methods, algorithms and computational techniques to better exploit next generation supercomputing platforms for the analysis and forecast of global challenges, including climate change, regional weather prediction, natural hazards, but also social challenges like major disruptions in financial markets. Given the short duration and the limitation of budget, projects are expected to focus on methodological development and testing to prove the feasibility and impact of the new methods proposed. Projects focused merely on methods and algorithms for current low-end computer platforms will not be supported.

Projects will be developed by one or more groups in a Swiss higher education institution, in close cooperation with the HP2C core group at CSCS and USI, which will provide scientific computing expertise (computational mathematics and computer science). The application developers from the project will also have access to the prototype computing hardware operated and maintained at CSCS.

Applicants are requested to notify their intention to submit an application by August 31, 2010. Complete project proposals must be submitted by September 15, 2010.

lGI_Global_ogo

This handbook will provide a basic reference text for the fundamental elements making up CSE and showing their interdependence in a way that (a) reviews state of the art and  current achievements; (b) explores imminent developments that will advance the state of play; and (c) presents these in a form accessible to as wide an audience of interested parties as possible.
