Call for Presentations and Partecipants: Forum on Parallel File Systems for HPC

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Dear members and guests of the hpc-ch community,

We are pleased to invite you to the upcoming hpc-ch forum on

Parallel File Systems for HPC

to be held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 10:00 until 17:00, kindly hosted by ETH Zurich by the HPC group of Olivier Byrde.

ETH Zurich will present its heterogeneous Brutus cluster (90 TF) and share their experience with the High-Availability Lustre file system (230 TB) attached to that cluster. The attendees will also have the chance to visit the ETH’s main computer room and see the multiple generations of hardware (2004-2010) that compose Brutus.

The goal of this forum is to exchange information about Parallel and Distributed File Systems for HPC. At the end of the day, each participant will have an overview of which systems are used in the other institutions, how they are used, and how easy/difficult they are to install and operate.

New Video Channel “CSCS on CSCS” Opened

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

CSCS created a video channel named CSCS on CSCS on the multimedia portal of ETH Zurich. On this channel CSCS will publish videos reporting on the  supercomputing centre like interviews with researchers using the supercomputers, videos showing the assembling of supercomputers, promotion videos and much more.

In September 2009 CSCS produced for an open day a series of illustrative video that are now available online. Two videos show for what purpose researchers are using the supercomputer at CSCS (astrophysics and drug design), in three additional videos employees of CSCS explain different aspects of the work being done at the centre.

Have a look (all the movies are in Italian).

L’astrofisica e i supercomputer, Prof. Lucio Mayer, University of Zurich

La metadinamica e le sue applicazioni in drug design, Vittorio Limongelli, ETH Zurich/USI

Il supercalcolo: simulare e visualizzare, Mario Valle, CSCS

I supercalcolatori del CSCS, Hussein Harake, CSCS

Introduzione al CSCS, Michele De Lorenzi, CSCS

Second cabinet of Cray XE6 installed at CSCS

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

On September 2, 2010 the second cabinet of the Cray XE6 arrived and was installed at CSCS (see previous posting). Both cabinets are identical and will be interconnected to build a single large system.

Continuing the tradition of CSCS, the Cray XE6 has been given the name of a Swiss mountain, in this case Palu. The Piz Palü is a mountain in the Bernina Range in the Canton of Graubünden. There are three summits on its ridge, the highest being 3’901 m high.

We should note that this has been the first installation in the world of a Cray XE6. CSCS and selected users have already run first benchmarks on Palu and they have been very promising. Palu will subsequently be made available to all users starting this week.

The second cabinet of Palu has been financed by the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) and will be used in particular by researchers of the Insitute of Computational Science of Prof. Rolf Krause.

The next two photos show the arrival by truck of the cabinet at CSCS and the installation of the second door with a nice representation of the Piz Palü.
