Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), Faculty of Informatics is seeking to fill a position of
Assistant professor with tenure track in “Computational biology”
The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI, Lugano) with the joint support of the Fondazione Daccò and of the Fondazione per la ricerca e lo sviluppo dell’USI invites applications from candidates of international research standing for an assistant-professor position with tenure track in computational biology. The new professor is expected to conduct worldclass research in this area of science in close collaboration with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB, located in Bellinzona) and to
contribute to teaching at all levels.
The Faculty of Informatics at USI was established in October 2004 and offers Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees in computer science and computational science. Since 2009 the Faculty has the Institute of Computational Science (ICS), which provides a rich research environment with strong competences in mathematical modeling, numerical simulation, and high-performance computing. Research areas at ICS range from numerical methods and tools for science, medicine, and engineering over computational time series analysis and computational shape analysis to cardiac electrophysiology and the (multi-scale) simulation of physical and biological systems. The IRB was founded in 2000 and is affiliated to USI since 2010. It is a centre of competence in immunology offering state-of-the-art core facilities and postgraduate education. The research focuses on the study of the immune system at the cellular and molecular level, in particular on antigen-antibody interactions and protein folding.
The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong research program in computational biology taking advantage of the top-notch scientific knowledge and infrastructures at ICS and IRB in their respective research fields as well as of the excellent computational facilities of the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS, in Lugano).
Applicants with strong research records in computational biology are welcome. USI specifically encourages female candidates to apply with the goal of increasing the proportion of female professors.
The official teaching language of the Faculty is English.
